18. ~ Cougar ~

Cougars are the best climbers of the feline family. In our western hemisphere, this cougar/mountain lion/puma is one of the fastest and most powerful four-legged creatures. It is also the second largest. It can leap forty or more feet. A favourite food of the cougar is the deer family. Cougars can be found residing up to 10,000 feet in mountainous regions, near swampy wooded areas, brush lands, grasslands and some tropical forested areas. Cougars are feared hunters, sometimes known as screamers, or ghost walkers. Some have also called them the ghost of the wilderness. No matter which name you prefer to call them, these are solitary cats. They are the largest cats on Turtle Island. Their average live time is thirteen years. Never, ever, approach these creatures as they are both dangerous and deadly. Stop in your tracks and try to give them a way out, 'any' way out! If you are attacked, fight for your very life! This big cat is a big meat eater. They stalk and kill deer, elk, sheep, horse, cattle, smaller animals, and on occasions - people. The cougar's weight ranges from one hundred thirty to three hundred pounds, depending on where they live. They are extremely unpredictable, fast, and expert hunters. Cougars are also lethal attackers. They are born with blue eyes that later turn yellow. The cougar is highly revered by First Nations/Native American peoples.

Medicine:

Cougars carry our messages to the higher spirits. Their medicine reminds us to use our power in a controlled manner and to not abuse it. For some nations they symbolize the northern direction. Cougar medicine tells us this is a time of mystery, secrets, and stealthy actions. It is time to take charge of yourself and to lead others in a silent example. The medicine of the cougar says remember to wait with patience, but then pounce when the best time presents itself. They tell us to stay strong and focused. Cougars remind us to have a plan and be ready to execute it with accuracy.
