32. ~ Flamingo ~

The pink colour in a flamingo is carotenoid which comes from the algae they consume. Its knees are actually its ankles. Flamingo tongues were once a delicacy. Flamingos fly with slow wing beats. Their long legs carry them through deep waters. They have a wingspan of sixty to sixty-five inches. They can weigh between seven and eight pounds. The call of the flamingo sounds similar to a goose. They stand about four to five feet in height. Low flying aircraft are a great threat to the flamingo. During feeding, a flamingo will submerge its bill in an upside down scooping fashion. It draws its downward tongue back, sucking in water. It then filters and traps its food with its bony bill plates. Flamingos can be found near salty lakes and wading in shallow waters. The beak of the flamingo is boomerang-shaped. Their breeding season is typically April - August. Both the male and the female share in the responsibilities of their nests. The beautiful flamingo bird takes a strong dislike to any kind of disturbances.
